Description
“Special Duty” workhorses, EMD SD-40-2 diesels hauled freight from one coast to the other. A modified version with distinctive, low-mounted air intakes called the SD-40T-2 was built for service in the snowsheds and tunnels of the West. The TMCC-equipped Lionel SD-40-2 is available in Jersey Central livery and the “tunnel motor” version is available in the “kodachrome” scheme of the proposed Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger. The SD-40T-2 includes unique see-through grilles as well as horn placement and headlight arrangement specific to the Southern Pacific prototype.
